SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 48
(By Senators White and Macnaughtan)
Expressing the sense of the West Virginia Legislature in
opposition to any increase in the maximum allowable weight
limits for heavy trucks on West Virginia highways and
encouraging the West Virginia congressional delegation to
support federal legislation freezing the maximum allowable
limits for heavy trucks on the national highway system.
Whereas, Studies show that increasing the maximum allowable
weight limits of heavy trucks would substantially increase the
dangers to motorists on West Virginia highways; and
Whereas, Heavy trucks already cause considerable damage to
West Virginia highways and bridges and studies show that
increases in maximum allowable weight limits for heavy trucks
would cause even further damage to West Virginia highways and
bridges; and
Whereas, The citizens of West Virginia already pay
substantial taxes to maintain the state highways and bridges by repairing the damage caused by heavy trucks; and
Whereas, The cost of maintaining the highways and bridges
would be even greater if the maximum allowable weight limits for
trucks were increased; and
Whereas, Recent polls show that between seventy-five percent
and ninety-three percent of West Virginians oppose any increase
in existing maximum allowable weight limits for heavy trucks; and
Whereas, West Virginians travel upon the roads of all fifty
states, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That there should be no increases in the maximum allowable
weight limits for trucks operating on West Virginia highways; and
be it
Further Resolved, That the West Virginia congressional
delegation is encouraged to support federal legislation freezing
the maximum allowable weight limits for trucks operating on the
interstates and other national highway system roadways; and, be
it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the Senate is hereby
requested to forward a copy of this resolution to the West
Virginia congressional delegation.
